"Recycling rain water, one barrel at a time!"
Planning & Installation

Choose a location for your barrel. Consider which
downspout you would like to divert into the barrel,
and the proximity to plants needing water.
Next, think about where the water that comes out
of the overflow pipe of the rain barrel will go. It
may simply go where the downspout had directed
water previously. Or, you may want to direct the
overflow pipe into a nearby compost bin or second
rain barrel, etc. You will want to make sure the
water is directed away from the foundation of
your home/building.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you
may want to elevate your rain barrel in order to
increase water pressure. Caution: full barrels can
weigh a couple hundred pounds. Elevation may be
achieved by simply choosing a location naturally
higher than the plants you wish to water, or by
selecting a very sturdy, stable base on which to
place your rain barrel.

If you are going to water your vegetable, herb or
fruit plants , you may want to consider purchasing
a downspout first flush water diverter so the first
water that flows off the roof is not saved.

General Care of Your Rain Barrel

Mosquitoes like to breed in standing water. Always keep the fine mesh
secured around the opening(s) of the barrel. This will help keep mosquitoes
and other organic materials out of the barrel.

We have read that one tablespoon of olive oil or special mosquito tablets in
your water will also help to keep mosquitoes from breeding in the barrel.

Winter care of Your Rain Barrel

In very cold weather, you should take your rain barrel out of operation.
When water freezes, it expands, possibly cracking your barrel or hose.
Disconnect your rain barrel for the winter months. Take the lid off, clean it
out and consider storing your rain barrel in a shed or garage in the winter.
